Last month, the government announced plans to launch a new national regulator for building safety in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017.
Within the proposals, it is proposed that failing to follow protocol for strict safety measures when designing and building high-rise homes will be a criminal offence. Furthermore, the plan will see the regulator body have the ability to enforce hefty fines to designers and building contractors who fail to adhere to the new compliance rules.
It is hoped that the new regulatory body will help to drive forward the standards of safety not only for the buildings and the designs but also the workers working on the construction site too. At the same time, the improvements in standards is looking to readdress and restore consumer confidence in living in high-rise buildings. The consultation for the proposals ended on 31st July 2019.
